Lower Gelvin Bridge, Ballyquin Road, Dungiven, Co Londonderry

Lower Gelvin Bridge, located on the Ballyquin Road near Dungiven, County Londonderry, has been demolished and replaced with a modern, single-span concrete beam bridge that carries the improved Ballyquin Road over the Gelvin Burn. The current bridge was erected in the later 1990s because the previous structure was deemed inadequate for the road’s increased traffic and potentially dangerous.

The earlier bridge, described in the first Buildings Survey, was a twin segmental arch structure built of rubble stone, with angled cutwaters on both the upstream and downstream sides. It possessed no ornamentation. The bridge is documented on maps from 1832 onwards and was likely constructed in the late 18th century or early 19th century. A report by F.W. Hamond, dated 26/5/1993, provides further details (IHR No. 1848). Sources include an Ordnance Survey map from 1832 and descriptive notes from the Environment and Heritage Service first Buildings Survey, alongside local information. The site, in the townland of Drumneechy, is of industrial archaeological interest.
