Description

A substantial stone overbridge dating to the later 19th century, built as part of the Limavady/Dungiven railway line. The bridge is of local interest, serving as a memorial to the former branch railway.

The bridge carries Mulkeeragh Road over the former single-track railway line. Constructed from random rubble sandstone, it features substantial abutments without batter. The arch is formed with well-formed voissoirs featuring rockface and tooled margins, while the underside of the arch and walls are in random rubble. Parapet walls return at right angles at each end, forming buttresses. The concrete copings are in a hogsback shape. The original railway track bed remains, though without rails or sleepers, and side drainage is still present, though heavily overgrown. The bridge sits within a pleasant agricultural landscape.

The railway line between Limavady and Dungiven was initially proposed in 1862, with the Skinners Company undertaking extensive reconstruction in Dungiven during the 1870s. The Limavady/Dungiven Railway Act received Royal Assent on 14th July 1878. John Lanyon, son of Sir Charles Lanyon, was appointed as engineer for the project. McCrea and McFarland signed a contract in April 1880 to construct the line for £39,438. The line opened for passenger and goods traffic on 4th July 1883, and the bridge was likely completed around 1882. The bridge is locally known as Douglas's Bridge, named after James Douglas, a local farmer who lived nearby at the time of construction. It is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
