Description
A sturdy, pleasing segmental two-arch sandstone bridge, dating to the mid-19th century, crosses the Gelvin Burn on the Gortnagross Road, near Dungiven, County Londonderry. The bridge is set within a peaceful, undulating agricultural landscape.
The bridge is constructed of roughly squared and coursed sandstone, with horizontal tooling to the faces. Each arch spans 5½ metres, featuring well-formed voissoirs and springing from comparatively low supporting walls. The walls terminate upstream with quasi-pointed breakwaters and downstream with rounded, half-spherical caps. The stonework is repeated on the soffit of the vault. There are no string courses; the parapet walls, 25 metres long and with a 6-metre carriageway width, are returned slightly at each end on the upstream side. The parapets are strengthened by two tie rods per arch. They are finished with a hogsback coping in concrete. The bridge sits within a gently sloping agricultural landscape alongside the Gelvin Burn. The approach roads, particularly the northern road locally known as the "Crooked Brae", curve and bend, contributing to the overall charm of the setting.
A bridge crossing is indicated on an Ordnance Survey map dated 1832. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest. Original construction probably occurred between 1780 and 1799. The bridge is owned by Central Government.
