Gelvin Graveyard, Legavallon Road, Dungiven, Co Londonderry

Gelvin Graveyard is a Roman Catholic burial ground situated on Legavallon Road, Dungiven, County Londonderry, and likely established after 1845. It replaces an earlier church site at Gortgarn, located to the east. The earliest legible headstone dates to 1847, reflecting the period after the construction of a new church building around 1845. The graveyard is divided into two areas by a path leading to the former church. Recent renovations include levelling the ground, reseeding with grass, and the addition of neat iron gates. Both sections are fenced, with some fencing near the former church still to be completed. The wall along the road frontage has been rebuilt using concrete blockwork faced with rubble schist. Several headstones from the Victorian and early 20th centuries have been retained and are well executed. This record should be read in conjunction with HB02/07/014.
