Description

This is an early 20th-century bridge formerly located on the Corrick Road, Dungiven, County Londonderry, carrying the road over the Owenalena River. The bridge is of historical interest within the Northern Ireland context, illustrating an early application of reinforced concrete construction techniques associated with the French engineer Francois Hennebique (1842-1821), who pioneered the use of ferro-concrete—concrete reinforced with steel bars—from 1892 onwards.

The original bridge, likely designed by C.L. Beddie in 1920, was a reinforced concrete structure built upon earlier piers and abutments. According to an early building survey, the original bridge was a simple design featuring a slab deck with parapet walls resting on abutments and a rusticated stone cutwater. A wooden bridge is reputed to have been built around 1907 and replaced in the 1940s, though this conflicts with survey records. The bridge’s location is a short distance above the Owenalena River's confluence with the River Roe, within the Cluntygeeragh “U” shaped valley.

In around 2000, the original concrete bridge deck was replaced with a new reinforced concrete beam bridge. Random rubble stone parapet walls, rebuilding sections of the original walls, remain at either end and curve downward, a characteristic feature of structures in County Londonderry. A portion of the original rubble stone parapet walls also survived. The bridge is considered to demonstrate industrial archaeological interest. It is now no longer standing as a result of its demolition.
