Description
The Tamniarin Bridge is a fine, late 18th century (1780-1799) random rubble stone bridge crossing the River Roe at the eastern end of Benady Glen, situated on the main road from Dungiven to Cookstown. It enjoys a romantic setting and possesses group value alongside Corick Bridge (HB02/07/021).
The bridge consists of five arches, almost semi-circular with a span of approximately 6 metres. These arches are lined with thin schist voissoirs and spring from low, wide supporting walls that terminate at each end in pointed breakwaters with pyramidal tops, all constructed in random rubble. The bases of the wall supports are strengthened with concrete aprons, and the tops of the breakwaters rise above the springing line of the arches. The arch soffits are roughly mortared, and two tie rods are threaded through the bridge between patress plates at each arch, halfway above the springing line. A remnant of a 6th arch exists on the south-eastern end of the bridge abutment, suggesting it was never used for water flow; typically, water flows through two of the arches. The long abutments have straight parapet walls over the river, but curve at the north-western end where the road bends and widen on the opposite side. The parapet copings are of flat, weathered concrete, and evidence of a raised parapet is visible, with earlier vertical stone stonework beneath. A laneway at the south-eastern end of the bridge parapet provides access to the river's edge.
The bridge has undergone general maintenance and strengthening but remains largely unaltered from its original form. Historical records indicate that the road was approximately 20 feet wide between the bridge parapets and in good repair. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
