Standing Stone, Priory Lane, Dungiven, Co Londonderry, BT47 4PF

A standing stone, likely dating from before 1600, is a prominent feature of the surrounding landscape. Tradition associates the stone with St Columcille, although it may be of even earlier prehistoric origin. The stone itself is a rectangular piece of schist, measuring approximately 1800mm high, 1200mm wide, and 300mm in depth and stands atop a wide grassy mound, which is described as 9 metres in diameter. Local tradition, as recorded in Bunn’s publication "Dungiven Days," suggests it may mark the site of an ecclesiastical assembly held in 590 AD, at which St Columbcille was present. Historical sources, including the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland, refer to the mound as “Leac Phadraig” or “St Patrick’s Stone.” The standing stone is not in State Care and is owned by the Roman Catholic Church. It is considered a monument.
