Standing Stone, Altimure Road, Gallany, Co Londonderry

The Standing Stone at Altimure Road, Gallany, Co Londonderry, is an isolated standing stone located within a grazing field and notable for its sculptural impact and local historical significance. The stone is substantial, approximately 1200mm high, with a comparable width and 400mm thickness. It shows no evidence of having been shaped. The townland name, Gallany, derives from the Irish word "Gallan," meaning a standing stone, though alternative interpretations exist. According to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, the area contains several prominent rocks, with two of the largest referred to as "the queen of the fairies rocks.” This standing stone serves as a monument, predating 1600, and remains in its original use. It is situated on private land and is not formally listed.
