Dungiven High School, 822 Glenshane Road, Dungiven, Co Londonderry, BT47 4PQ

Dungiven High School is a post-war secondary school built between 1960 and 1979 by the Architects Department of the former County Londonderry Education Committee. Designed by Noel Campbell, an architect known for his imaginative and inventive approach to school design, the school has a ‘H’ shaped plan with a covered walkway connecting it to the adjacent primary and technical school. The building is of flat-roofed, cubist design, featuring a variety of external materials common in 1950s schools. These include smooth painted rendering, iron-stained Claudy schist rubble walls, extensive metal glazing, and slim steel columns. Architectural elements such as the assembly hall, entrance, classrooms, and ancillary accommodation are robustly expressed, with significant horizontal lines, flat roofs with generous overhangs, and mineral felt membrane finishes. The school is situated set back from the Glenshane Road, with a straight avenue approach leading from the adjacent primary school to a general forecourt near the main entrance. While most classrooms have a south-eastern aspect, some teaching rooms benefit from high lateral lighting. The building's group value is noted as there are better examples of Noel Campbell’s work elsewhere in the county.
