Glenshane Bridge, over River Roe, Old Glenshane Road, Glenshane T.D., Dungiven, Co Londonderry

This is a reinforced concrete bridge over the River Roe, dating approximately from the 1950s. It carries the Old Glenshane Road, which is part of the former Dungiven/Maghera route. The bridge has four arches, each with a span of around 2 metres, and a carriageway width of approximately 3.6 metres. The construction consists of flat concrete beams supported by sturdy concrete block piers, and it lacks parapet walls. It is situated within Glenshane Forest, on a section of the old road that turns west from its source on the slopes of White Mountain. The current bridge replaced an earlier 3-arch stone bridge, originally described in Ordnance Survey Memoirs as having two arches of 18 feet span and a third half that size. This earlier structure is documented on both the 1832 Ordnance Survey map and in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs. The bridge’s historical significance lies in its role as a river crossing along the old Dungiven/Maghera Road, and it is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
