Description

57 Irish Green Street is a mid-Victorian terraced house of Grade B2 importance, built between 1840 and 1859. It forms part of a good group with one similar neighbour, complemented by a later Victorian terrace, and its location enhances the setting of the Second Presbyterian Church.

The building is a two-storey, four-bay end-of-terrace house rendered in sand and cement in the Georgian style, facing east onto Irish Green Street. It has a natural slate roof with rendered chimneys at each end of the ridge; the northern chimney is twice the width of that on the southern gable.

The principal elevation features twelve-pane sliding sash windows to each floor with painted stone cills. The front door, located in the second bay from the south end, is flanked by Doric pilasters supporting a projecting entablature and has a rectangular fanlight with cobweb astragals—a detail matched exactly by its neighbour. The panelled door appears to be an appropriate modern replacement. A threshold step projects approximately 500mm into the footpath but sits almost flush with its surface.

The south gable, also rendered in sand and cement, contains a square casement window at attic level. A PVC gutter returns along the wall at its cill level. At ground level, a small PVC casement has been inserted near the rear, and a lean-to return with two similar windows aligns with the wall.

The rear elevation has three first-floor windows. The central twelve-pane sash drops into the top of the lean-to and lights the stairs. The other two windows are four-pane sashes of similar size. A large PVC window with Georgian mullion pattern lights the kitchen in the lean-to.

The fine detail of the interior living room and staircase is notable. The decorative character of the living room would normally suggest a date towards the end of the century, indicating the interior may have been renovated at that time.

To the rear of the site stands a single-storey whitewashed brick stable block with a corrugated metal roof. A central arch (flat on the house side, segmental to the garden) set partly within the curtilage of number 55 gives access to the long garden. Slatted timber doors to the left provide access to the present garage. The lean-to return and small rear casement are modern additions by the present occupants, who have lived in the house for five years.

The house first appears on the 1848 Ordnance Survey Map. In the 1858 Griffith's Valuation, it was occupied by Reverend Peter Finan, leased from Mr J Craig at a value of £12 10s 0d. Reverend Finan also leased a garden in what is now 63 Irish Green Street at that time. The building has been used as a dwelling house continuously since.
