Description

The building is a small neo-gothic hall church dating to 1877, situated on Irish Green Street in Limavady, County Londonderry. It replaced an earlier Methodist building and a Wesleyan chapel that had existed previously in the town. A chapel was also erected in 1773 on the opposite side of Main Street. The church was designed by Edward McNerlage and cost £700 to construct, with a further £400 loan secured in 1878 for the minister’s residence.

The church is constructed with a striking combination of dark basalt and yellow brick, trimmed with sandstone details. It has a gable facing Irish Green Street, three bays wide and four bays deep. The roof is pitched and covered with natural Bangor blue slates. A pointed entrance door, centrally placed, is accessed by three steps, flanked by narrow pointed lancet windows, with a group of three taller lancets above, all trimmed in yellow brick. Massive double-stepped buttresses, terminating in single sandstone moulded pinnacles, are positioned on either side of the entrance gable, with brickwork detailing the quoins. Brick string courses break up the gable horizontally. An unusual, angular finial tops the gable apex. Four tall pointed lancet windows are present along each long wall, also bound by brick. The rear gable lacks buttresses, but the quoins are edged with yellow brick. Sandstone barge stones finish the gables, along with a now-defunct chimney on the rear.

Adjacent to the church is the minister’s residence, a two-story, three-bay wide building with smooth rendered and painted walls. To the rear of the church is a flat-roofed church hall connected by a link containing a minister’s room. The church is situated approximately 10 metres from the footwalk, bounded by a low wall and gates with railings. Irish Green Street was formerly known as Market Street.
