Description

This is a well-preserved example of “homes for heroes,” a type of accommodation built for ex-service personnel during the interwar years. The pair of storey-and-a-half semi-detached houses are in a simple Arts and Crafts style, located set back from Irish Green Street behind a six-metre long garden and block wall. Each half is similarly maintained, creating the impression of a single house. The houses are symmetrical where they join, marked by a shared downpipe. Constructed in 1925 by Holmes Builders for the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust to a standard plan, they are harled and white washed, with steeply sloping manmade slate roofs. Each house features a tall, white-washed chimney with four small pots on the ridge, near the centre. A two-and-a-half-metre-long dormer with a lean-to roof sits below the chimney, its base aligned with the eaves line of the joint facade. The roof overhangs each house's gable by one metre, with further projection over the front door to create a rain shelter. Windows and doors are timber-framed and stained. High-level square windows are present on each gable, along with a similar window directly below and a side door. A rear dormer, similar to the front, illuminates the attic story, with its base aligning with the eaves. The rear elevation features two square windows, symmetrical about the chimney and dormer, and near each gable, a smaller window with a higher cill height. The houses face west towards Irish Green Street, with a long, linear garden extending 20 metres behind. A group of similar cottages exists in Myroe Ward, but these have been renovated. These houses were often sold by the Trust after the original occupant’s death.
