Description
These are a pair of storey-and-a-half semi-detached houses constructed between 1920 and 1939 as "homes for heroes" for ex-service personnel. They were built by Holmes Builders in 1925 for the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust, to a standard plan, and are located on Irish Green Street in Limavady. The pair are well-preserved and maintain a similar appearance, giving the impression of a single house. They are set back from the street behind a six-metre long garden and block wall. The houses are symmetrical about their joint, which is marked by a downpipe.
Architecturally, they are in a simple Arts and Crafts style. The exterior is harled and whitewashed with a steeply sloping manmade slate roof. Each house has a white-washed chimney with four small pots on the ridge, near the centre point. A two-and-a-half metre long dormer with a lean-to roof is positioned along the eaves of the joint facade. The roof overhangs the gable one metre, and extends further above the door to create a rain shelter. Timber-framed windows and doors are stained. Each gable features a square high-level window, a similar window directly below, and a side door. A rear dormer, similar to the front, illuminates the attic storey, with its base aligned with the eaves. The ground floor has two square windows symmetrical about the chimney and dormer, with a smaller window of higher cill height near the gable.
The interior is not described. The long, linear garden extends 20 metres to the rear. The houses face west towards Irish Green Street. The original owner’s father was the first occupant in 1925, and houses of this type were often sold by the Trust following the original occupant’s death. A similar group of cottages survives in Myroe Ward, but has since been renovated.
