Description
This is a two-storey, four-bay brick terraced house built between 1880 and 1899, located on Irish Green Street in Newtown Limavady. The front of the house retains some late Victorian detailing. Initially part of a larger development, it was built as one of seven brick cottages and replaced several earlier, smaller thatched dwellings.
The house’s design incorporates elements similar to the two adjacent buildings to the south, sharing a comparable door case style. Distinctive features include a sand cement band above the first-floor windows, and the absence of render on the façade, differentiating it from the terrace to the north. A decorated brick cornice supports the eaves, and the roof is covered with natural slate and includes rooflights. Large brick chimneys with eight pots each are positioned at each end of the ridge. A passageway with a flat arch at the northern end of the front facade leads to the rear. The front door, of the same height as the simple rectangular fanlight above it, is surrounded by painted sand cement decoration, featuring an architrave with a central keystone, Doric pilasters, and brackets supporting a cornice. There are two tiled steps leading to the interior. The windows are two-pane sliding sashes, with a painted string course at first-floor cill level. The rear of the house features a two-storey pitched return wall, lower than the eaves, and a single-storey rendered kitchen extension. A long, well-maintained garden occupies the remainder of the plot.
Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps, indicate the site was vacant in 1831 and contained a smaller building in 1848. The 1858 Griffiths Valuation assigned a value of £3 5s 0d to the plot, then occupied by three houses. The building was raised to the same height and given comparable detailing as the older pair of houses that border it to the south. Renovations and repairs were undertaken in 1991, and the building has remained in continuous residential use.
