Description
This is a mid-Victorian, two-classroom school building, constructed between 1840 and 1859 and now converted into a dwelling. It was built as part of the National Board of Education and features a detached teacher’s residence at the rear, though this is no longer part of the listed building. The architect was likely George Given (1815 - 1883).
The building is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings, including quoins and window surrounds. The chamfered plinth is also finished in sandstone. Each classroom has four tall, round-headed windows, while a larger round-headed window illuminates the gable facing the road, with a smaller round-headed window on a flanking wall. A further two oculi punctuate the gable of the other classroom. The slate roof is pierced by a single chimney with two pots, and each room originally had a fireplace. The contrast between the brick and sandstone creates a distinctive architectural statement.
Approximately three years ago, the school was converted into a house, involving the demolition of the original residence and the construction of a rear extension to create a large entrance hall. While attempts have been made to maintain the original appearance, the timber casement windows have been replaced with uPVC. The building now forms part of a development called Cherryvale Park, which includes Lomond House and two new dwellings. The decorative bargeboards are a modern addition and not similar to the original design. During the construction of the new work, a sandstone quoins was carefully removed and reincorporated into a new corner where the new brickwork meets the original. The location of the original windows remains visible.
