Description

Wheatfield House is a small, red brick house dating from between 1820 and 1839. It is located on Seacoast Road, Lower Culmore, near Limavady, and sits within two acres of well-maintained gardens and mature trees. The house is two and a half storeys high and three bays wide, with a large, flat-roofed brick porch projecting from the front. It has a half-hipped natural slate roof and a square overall plan, with a basement extending over the southwestern portion. The brickwork is in Flemish bond, typical of the area. Gutters are cast iron, with an ogee profile changing to half round on the sides.

The building’s original Georgian character has been altered by the installation of casement windows during the Edwardian period or later, likely replacing earlier sliding sash windows. A curious pointed window with slender, converging astragals is situated under the half hip on the side of the house. A porch was added by the current owner’s husband.

Behind the house is an extensive range of outbuildings, including a coach house, a former dairy, and sheephouses. The sheephouses form a single-storey range at right angles to the coach house, creating a walled grass paddock with two magnificent oak trees at its centre.

Wheatfield House was occupied by the Pattons in 1835, followed by the Hemphills and later the Moodys. According to the current owner, the house was likely established around 1700 and significantly altered around 1900, with decorative glass installed at that time.
