Description
This is a fine and imposing Georgian house, dating to around 1805, situated on a secluded site. The date is inscribed on a brick on the west gable. The house has been remarkably well-preserved and remains largely unaltered since its construction. It is likely that it was built by John Martin, who resided there around 1835.
The house is a two-storey, five-bay wide structure constructed of local red brick, with a basement that extends beneath the entire building. This design raises the ground floor, creating a broad flight of steps leading to the main entrance. Viewed from the entrance avenue, the house appears as a large cubic form, although its actual L-shaped plan is clearer from other angles. The rear elevation rises to three floors, incorporating a sunken courtyard and a one-and-a-half-storey coach house projecting from the main house. A quadrant of the staircase, pierced by windows, protrudes from the internal angle of the L. The west facade features five bays, with some basement windows blocked, with the exception of one. Several windows on the main floors have also been blanked internally; two in the lounge were bricked up, although the external window sashes were retained to avoid window tax. The exterior walls are faced with handmade red brick in Flemish bond with crude flash pointing, while the walls below the basement cill level are of random schist. The roofs are covered in natural slates, and numerous chimney stacks are present. The windows are timber sashes, painted white, with 12 panes on the ground floor, six panes in the basement, nine panes on the first floor, and 15 panes in the main staircase window. Modern plastic guttering and downpipes are fitted. The entrance features a high, squared fanlight matching the window style. Wrought iron balustrades flank the entrance steps. The coach house has a large, semi-circular opening and includes a loft. Detached outhouses are also present. The house is screened from the Sea Coast Road by mature trees.
The building displays group value through its architectural style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, and setting and has local historical interest. The property is privately owned.
