Carrowmena Outdoor Centre (former School), 100 Carrowclare Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry BT49 9EB

This is a primary school built in the 1930s, designed by CS Agnew, an architect with the Ministry of Finance. It was erected in 1936 as a Public Elementary School and is located on Carrowclare Road, Limavady, County Londonderry. The building’s design is similar to that advocated by Wilshere.

The school has a simple plan and is neatly positioned within its setting. The exterior walls are roughcast and painted cream, while a slightly projecting porch has a contrasting burnt umber smooth rendering, lined to resemble masonry. The cast iron ogee gutters and downpipes are in good repair. A chimney stack pierces the roof ridge diagonally between the two classrooms. The building exhibits an Arts & Crafts flavour.

The school ceased operating as an educational facility in 1976 and is now used as an outdoor pursuits centre. A later extension provides space for outdoor education activities and has been added without significantly altering the building’s overall appearance, although the window detailing could be more considered.
