Description
The building is a late Victorian neo-gothic style hall church, dating from 1888, replacing an earlier church established in 1806. It was founded by the Convenanter, or Reformed Presbyterian, community and holds local historical and social significance.
The church is a small, unassuming building with a principal entrance in the gable facing the road. It is built with cream roughcast rendering and has smooth plaster surrounds to the pointed windows. The roof is covered with natural slates. A modern extension with a pitched roof and one and a half storeys replaces the former minister’s room at the rear. The entrance gable features a central pointed doorway, with pointed lancet windows on either side, and a wider, larger lancet window above the door, each with a hood moulding. High in the gable, above the upper lancet, is a circular moulded plaster plaque inscribed with the date 1888. A smooth band of rendering defines the corners of the gable and runs along the bargeboards. The side walls contain four pointed lancet windows similar to those on the gable. The rear extension is similarly treated with pointed windows. While the rear entrance has a flat head, a pointed and hooded spandrel is positioned above it.
The church is situated close to the road and is surrounded by car parking. To the rear and sides are areas of green space containing graves. A church hall, placed parallel to the main building with an intervening car parking space, is also located within the site, as is a red brick boundary wall.
The first Reformed Presbyterian Church was established on this site in 1806. The original building was described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as a plain rectangular structure with six windows on each side, and an entrance door in each gable. Constructed at a cost of £400, it was 64 feet long by 28 and a half feet wide, accommodating approximately 320 people. The original building was noted for having unpainted pews, an unceiled interior, and a well-maintained roof. A stone inscribed with the initials “I” and “M,” representing James Marshall, who was instrumental in the building’s construction, was present in the north-east gable.
