Description
Crowhill is a house built between 1824 and 1826 for Joseph Atkinson, designed by an architect named Brownlees. The estate's history began with the Hoope family, passing to the Atkinsons in 1791 through the marriage of Sarah Hoope to Joseph Atkinson. Ownership transferred out of the Atkinson family in 1952. Two gate lodges originally served the house, dating before 1834, though they were subsequently demolished. The Ordnance Survey map of 1834-5 for County Armagh and related historical documents (including W.T. Pike’s "Belfast and the Province of Ulster", M. Bence-Jones' "Burke's Guide to Country Houses", the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, J.A.K. Dean's "The Gate Lodges of Ulster", and C.E.B. Brett's "Buildings of County Armagh") provide further historical context. The building is currently in private ownership and remains in use as a house.
