Description

This is a brick-built block of three estate workers’ dwellings, constructed around 1910. It is located on the north-western side of Woburn Road, approximately two miles south of Millisle. Originally exhibiting a somewhat typical Edwardian picturesque quality, the block has undergone significant alterations including large rear extensions and the replacement of window frames.

The front, south-eastern facade features a central doorway with a modern, partially glazed door (leading to number 45), surrounded by a rendered, shouldered frame. There are two windows to either side of the doorway, all with modern frames. A gabled dormer is positioned directly above the doorway, containing a smaller window with a modern frame. Chamfered quoins are visible on the front facade, with paint used to simulate window dressings. The south-western gable displays two upper-level windows with modern frames. A lean-to extension containing a modern window is on the ground floor of the SW gable. A modern entrance door to number 47 is on the SE facade, which merges into a large, modern, two-storey, flat-roofed extension covering the entire rear of number 47. Both the gable and extension are finished with plain render. The north-eastern gable also has two upper-level windows with modern frames. A brick-built gabled extension with a PVC door to number 43 is on the ground floor, and a large single-storey brick-built extension with a flat roof and modern windows extends from the rear of number 43. The rear of number 45 is dominated by a recently constructed, two-storey, gabled brick extension with modern windows. The main steeply pitched roof is covered in Bangor blue slates and features two centred brick chimney stacks, partly rendered. Overhangs are present at the verge and eaves, and the rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC.

According to the owner of number 43, the block was built around 1910 to house workers on the Woburn estate. Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60 show earlier buildings on the site, none of which appear to have survived.
