Description
Wyncroft is a substantial but relatively plain two storey suburban residence dating from approximately the 1890s, situated on the west side of Warren Road, roughly half a mile north of Donaghadee town centre. The house appears on the 1901 Ordnance Survey town plan of Donaghadee. Local tradition suggests it may have been built by someone with a connection to the firm of Colman's mustard, though this has not been confirmed.
The symmetrical front façade faces roughly east and is finished in lined render with moulded in-out quoins to the front and front bays, a bevelled base course and eaves course. The centre of the façade features the main entrance, which comprises a panelled timber door with a plain fanlight and simple moulded surround. A flight of steps leads to the entrance. To either side of the doorway is a large canted single storey bay with a parapet-concealed roof. Each face of the bays contains a PVC window resting on a sill course, beneath which is a bevelled base. Above window level runs a cornice course and parapet. The first floor has five windows with simple moulded surrounds; the two outer windows on each side are paired. All windows throughout the property have PVC frames.
The gabled roof is slated with decorative red clay ridge tiles and features a slight overhang with end brackets to the eaves on the front. Two Velux windows are set into the front slope and one to the rear slope. The roof appears to have been replaced in recent times; photographic evidence indicates that until at least 1973 it had parapets rather than the current gabled form. Two tall rendered chimney stacks rise to the main gables.
The south gable contains a window roughly centred on both floors. The north gable has a window to the right on both floors and merges with the north face of a two storey rear return. To the left of the rear elevation is a relatively shallow two storey gabled return. A large modern single storey extension with a hipped roof has recently been added to this return, obscuring the ground floor level. On the still-exposed first floor of this return is a small window. Immediately to the right stands a shallow two storey bay with a short lean-to roof merging with the main roof. Each floor of this bay contains a large window whose PVC frame incorporates original stained and patterned glazing. To the right of this bay is a relatively recent flat-roofed conservatory bay with modern glazing. Above this, on the rear façade of the main building, is a small window. Metal rainwater goods serve the property throughout. The entire property has been fitted with PVC window frames, and a large modern extension has been constructed to the rear.
