35 New Road, Donaghadee

This is a mildly picturesque two-storey Victorian semi-detached house, built in 1869 and finished in stuccoed render. It stands at the end of a short drive north of New Road, just north of Donaghadee town centre, paired with its matching neighbour at number 33.

The asymmetrical front façade, which faces roughly south, displays typical features of Victorian domestic architecture. At ground floor centre is the main entrance: a panelled timber door with a plain rectangular fanlight, encased by plain pilasters and topped with a cornice hood supported on decorative consul brackets. Steps lead up to the door. To the left is a full-height gabled bay projecting slightly forward. This bay contains, at ground floor, a single-storey canted bay with sash windows to each face, a sill course, panelled aprons, a cornice course, and parapet. At first floor, the large gabled bay contains another sash window with label moulding. To the right of the doorway is a large double sash window with label moulding. Above the doorway, between the left bay and the right window, is a small decorative date plaque bearing '1869'. The first floor of the west gable contains two widely spaced sash windows, slightly smaller in scale. At first floor right, a sash window is set within a half-dormer and has a rope-patterned moulded surround.

The rear elevation is constructed in brick. It features a relatively large two-storey gabled return to the right of centre. The west face of this return has two sash windows at first floor; the gable above is blank. At ground floor, a single-storey lean-to shed projects from the gable. The east face of the return contains two sash windows with vertical glazing bars (two panes over two) at ground floor, with a timber-sheeted door immediately to their left. The main house's rear façade has a sash window (two over two) at ground floor to the west of the return, with two further windows to the ground floor left of the return, both plain glazed but of differing sizes. At stair landing level, immediately left of the return, is a sash window with margin panes. Two smaller sash windows occupy the first floor.

The front façade and main gable are finished in lined render with in-and-out quoins. Rendered chimney stacks are located on the west gable and east side (the latter shared with number 33). The slated gabled roof features an overhang and decorative barges. Cast iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout. A two-storey brick outbuilding stands to the rear.

The house was built by a Mr Dickson, whose descendants occupied number 35 until 1938.
