Description

33 New Road, Donaghadee

A mildly picturesque two storey Victorian semi-detached house of 1869, finished in lined render with in-out quoins. The house and its matching neighbour at the end of a short drive north of New Road exemplify typical features of the period, including large gabled half-dormers, a canted bay, roof overhang and decorative barges.

The asymmetrical south-facing front façade is organised around a central entrance. The main entrance consists of a panelled timber door with plain rectangular fanlight, framed by plain pilasters and a cornice hood supported on decorative consul brackets, with steps leading to the door. To the left is a large double sash window. To the immediate right is a full height gabled bay that projects slightly. The ground floor of this bay contains a single storey canted bay with sash windows to each face, a sill course, panelled aprons, cornice course and parapet. The first floor of the large gabled bay has a sash window with label moulding.

To the left on the first floor is a sash window within a half-dormer, featuring a rope pattern moulded surround. Above the doorway is a small window with leaded lights. Roughly to the centre of the east gable ground floor is a sash window, with two widely spaced slightly smaller sash windows at first floor level.

The rear elevation features a relatively large two storey gabled return to the left of centre. The east face of the return has two first floor sash windows and a small ground floor window with a recent casement frame; the gable itself is blank. A single storey flat roofed boiler house projects from the ground floor of the gable. The west face of the return has a broad window with Georgian paned casement frame, not original (apparently originally two smaller windows), and to its right is a small breeze block-built lean-to rear porch at the intersection of the return and main rear façade. The porch has a timber sheeted door to its north face and a small fixed light window to its west face.

The rear façade of the main house has sash windows to ground floor left of the return and to the right of the lean-to porch. Further right is a modern glazed double door (probably originally a window). Directly above the lean-to porch is a stair landing level sash window with margin panes and acid etched glazing. Two smaller sash windows occupy the first floor.

The front façade, main gable, east face and gable of the return, and the main rear façade left of the return are finished in lined render; the west face of the return and rear façade to the right are in brick. The lean-to is in painted breeze block. The front façade and main gable have been recently re-rendered and are unpainted. The slated gabled roof has an overhang with decorative barges. Rendered chimney stacks stand at the east gable and to the west side (shared with number 35). Cast iron rainwater goods are present throughout.

A two storey brick outbuilding to the rear appears to have been converted to living quarters.

The house and its neighbour were built by a Mr Dickson in 1869, whose descendants lived in number 35 until 1938.
