Description

24 Warren Road is a substantial two and a half storey late Victorian terrace house of circa 1895, forming part of a block of four matching properties positioned on a slight rise overlooking the coastline north of Donaghadee. The house is located west of Warren Road, north of Donaghadee town centre, at the south end of the terrace.

The asymmetric front elevation faces east. The ground floor entrance to the left consists of a panelled timber door with an almost semicircular arched fanlight, set within a moulded surround featuring plain pilasters and an architrave with keystone, approached by steps. Directly above at first floor level is a window within a segmental headed opening with mannerist moulded surround, keystone, shoulder and base blocks. Above this, at attic level within a gabled half-dormer, is a much smaller similar window. The right side of the elevation features a large full-height curved bay with three windows to both ground and first floors, each resting on a sill course with further moulded courses above and a bracketed eaves course. These courses continue across the entire front elevation of the whole terrace. The bay is topped with a slated conical roof and finial. The ground floor is finished in painted rusticated render with painted plain render above, a bevelled base course and prominent eaves course.

The south gable is blank rendered except for a small ground floor window to the left, merging with the south face of a large three-storey gabled return. This return has a window at ground floor centre, first floor right and second floor right on its east-facing elevation. On its west-facing gable are two first floor windows and one second floor window. The inner north face has windows to first and second floors on the left. The narrow exposed rear section of the main house to the left of the return has ground, first and attic floor windows, the latter within a gabled half-dormer. The rear elevation and return are finished in painted render with slated gabled roofs and saw-tooth ridge tiles. A tall rendered chimney stack with cornice course stands to the north. Cast iron rainwater goods are visible. A tall rendered wall encloses the rear yard.

The house now has PVC window frames throughout. The terrace appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1901 and was probably constructed around 1895, though one resident suggests 1899.
