Description
The site located to the north side of Shore Street Presbyterian Church was once occupied by a single-story National Schoolhouse built in 1861. This was the third National School established in Donaghadee. The building was demolished in 1998 and replaced with a modern church hall.
A survey conducted in February 1973 described the building as having a slated, gabled front, extending backwards at a lower level to form an enclosed court connecting at right angles to the church. A rendered and painted chimney was present. The front gable featured a verge course and pilaster quoins, with a central triple window that was wider and taller than the others, all displaying gothic heads and label mouldings. The windows were drop-hung with vertical astragals. The building was noted to be in fair condition, with the front gable measuring approximately 21 feet in width.
Unusually for a National School, it appears to have been physically linked to the Presbyterian Church, which contravened legislation forbidding connections between National Schools and any denomination. It ceased operating as a school sometime before 1939, as it is not marked on the Ordnance Survey map of that year, and subsequently served as a church hall. Historic documents from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) detail valuation plans from 1864 to 1956. A book published in 1977 incorrectly suggested a construction date of around 1894.
