Description
14 New Road is a large two-and-a-half storey Edwardian free style terrace house, part of a distinctive asymmetric block of approximately 1905 designed by James A. Hanna. The block contains three dwellings and displays the characteristic Hannaesque mixture of canted bays with scalloped parapets, half dormer gables, and prominent chimneys, all executed in a combination of brick, stone, and rough cast. Number 12, forming the east end of the terrace, is largely identical to this middle property, number 14, with both ultimately traditional plan terrace houses dressed in an Edwardian eclectic façade. Number 16, at the west end, is slightly larger and of less traditional, freer design.
The terrace is located on the south side of New Road, to the north of Donaghadee town centre. The asymmetric front north façade features a slightly decorative glazed and panelled front door with a simple four-pane fanlight over, positioned to the right side on the ground floor. To the left is a two-storey canted flat-roofed bay with a decorative scalloped parapet. Each face of the bay on each floor has a simple six-pane casement window, with those to the first floor shorter. Each window is dressed with sandstone surrounds. At attic level, a large gabled half-dormer is centred on the bay and sports a three-pane casement window. The edges of the front dormer wall are battered while the gable has a moulded coping.
The rear elevation features semicircular arch-headed French windows to the right side. A two-over-two sash window is located to the right side of the first floor. The left side of the elevation comprises a two-storey return, which is shared with number 16 to form one large gabled return. The east face of the return has a two-over-two sash window to the far right side of the ground floor. To the first floor there are three casement windows, all positioned to the far right side. The gable of the return has a large modern window to the right side and a small lean-to porch with timber-sheeted door to the left side.
The terrace was designed in 1905, though possibly not built until approximately 1907, by architect James A. Hanna for Mr Francis McCormick JP. Number 16 became Mr McCormick's home while the remaining houses were a speculative development.
