Description
This is a single-storey, gabled house of probable early nineteenth-century origin, though significantly altered and extended in recent times. It is located on the east side of Ballywalter Road, approximately two miles south of Millisle.
Originally, the southwest-facing facade (facing the road) was the front of the house, but it has been heavily modified and now features three small window openings and one large, modern window, all with PVC frames and modern cills. Previously, the facade included an entrance door and four smaller windows. The southeast and northwest gables remain blank. The rear of the house has undergone extensive extensions, including a lean-to section that runs almost the entire length of the rear elevation. A long, gabled return projects from this lean-to. All rear sections have modern window openings with PVC frames. A modern glazed entrance door with a large sidelight is located on the left side of the southeast-facing return facade. The entire facade is finished in rough cast render. The original house has a pitched roof covered with Bangor blue slates, along with part of the lean-to roof. The return roof is covered with asbestos-free slates. A single rendered chimney stack is present on the original house roof, with PVC rainwater goods.
A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, likely corresponding to the original southwest section of the dwelling. The alterations to the former front facade and the extensions to the return at the rear were all undertaken after 1973.
Valuation records from the 1830s, Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, and a valuation from 1863, all held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), document the site's history. Construction of the house in its current form occurred between 1980 and 1999. While the original section of the house is likely quite old, the extensive modern alterations have rendered the overall appearance bland and uninteresting.
