Description
Brown's Island is a relatively large, two-story farmhouse dating to approximately 1880-90, with a return wing likely added in the twentieth century. The house sits on a slight rise on the north side of Moss Road, about three miles west of Millisle.
The front, south-facing facade features a central doorway framed by fluted pilasters and a segmental arched decorative entablature, topped with a fanlight and sidelights. Twin sash windows flank the doorway, with simple surrounds, although the window on the inner right side has lost its frame and is now covered with a corrugated metal sheet. Three evenly spaced windows are on the first floor, mirroring the ground floor design, but similarly the window on the right has lost its frame and is boarded. The east gable has two sash windows on each side of the first floor and one on the ground floor. The west gable has two sash windows on each side of the first floor. The rear of the house features a two-story gabled return wing with modern metal windows and a door. Further sash windows are positioned to either side of the return wing on the rear of the main house, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The facade is finished with lined render, while the return wing has plain render. The roofs are pitched and covered with Bangor blue slates, with rendered parapets. Two yellow brick chimneys rise from the main roof, and cast iron rainwater goods are present. Outbuildings are located to the east and north of the house.
A building existed on the site according to Ordnance Survey Maps from 1833-4 and 1858-60, but its design and orientation (eastwards) differ from the current building, which appears to have been constructed in the 1880s. The return wing was likely added in the early to mid twentieth century.
