Description

The site represents the footprint of a former single-story vernacular house, likely constructed around 1840 and demolished relatively recently. Located on the west side of Upper Gransha Road, approximately 3.5 miles northeast of Newtownards, the house was described in the first Ordnance Survey card as a single-story cottage with a slated roof, brick chimneys, and rubble walls rendered and whitewashed. The front elevation originally featured a sequence of window, door, window, door, and window. The windows were horizontally divided with astragals, and the doors were sheeted, with the right-hand door also being a half-door. The site appeared on the revised Ordnance Survey maps of 1858-60 but not on those of 1834, indicating the building was constructed sometime between those dates. Historical records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) corroborate this, including the first revised Ordnance Survey map (Down 6) and a valuation record from around 1863.
