Description
Grainey Lodge is a single-storey former farmhouse built in 1722, situated on the north side of Donaghadee Road near the hamlet of Six Road Ends. The house was substantially extended at the rear around 1967, approximately doubling its original size.
The front east-facing facade is finished in uneven roughcast and features a partly glazed door positioned to the right. Adjacent to the door is an inscribed stone dated '17 J.HM 22' bearing the inscription 'At ye expiration of my lease I diser ye land lord of this place to considre ye builders case', indicating that J.HM was the builder. The inscription suggests this may be James Hamilton, a connection supported by valuation records from 1835 which record a James Hamilton as the owner. To the left of the door are three similar windows with modern frames and small panes, accompanied by false shutters on one. To the right is a larger window with a modern frame featuring Georgian panes and side shutters. The facade shows patching in rough plain render where the original thatch previously extended to cover the top section.
The north gable features a tiny four-light window to the right and a small loft opening higher up. The south gable contains a window matching those on the front facade. The original section has a gabled roof covered with corrugated fibre cement sheeting, beneath which part of the original thatch remains. The roof is supported by three rendered chimney stacks with stone parapets and metal rainwater goods.
The large flat-roofed extension added around 1967 covers the entire rear elevation and incorporates modern windows and doors. A modern glazed conservatory has been added to the south of this extension.
The house retains its original important roof construction almost intact, a significant survival. During the Second World War, the thatch was covered with corrugated sheeting as a fire precaution following incendiary bomb damage to neighbouring buildings in the vicinity.
The property sits within an extensive site with large gardens to front and rear. To the north are single-storey gabled outbuildings used as garages and storage, rendered with roofs of natural slate and fibre cement sheeting. A cow-tailed water pump set within curved waist-high walling stands to the northeast, representing an increasingly rare relic of past domestic practice and contributing significantly to the building's character.
The house likely originated as an estate house. It was recorded in the 1835 valuation records with a rateable value of £5-9-7. By the later nineteenth century it had passed to the Baxter family, who retained ownership until the mid-twentieth century. Despite the rear extension and alterations to window openings, the building retains considerable early character and enjoys a good rural setting.
