Description

4-6 Main Street is a large, relatively plain two-storey roughcast terrace house built between 1840 and 1859 as two separate dwellings, which were subsequently amalgamated in recent years. The building is situated on the north-west side of Main Street in Greyabbey and forms part of a short terrace with two other contemporary properties.

The front façade is asymmetrical and faces approximately south-east. To the centre left is a recent panelled and glazed door with a plain semicircular fanlight, all encased with relatively plain painted stone pilasters and archivolt. To the left of this door is a Georgian-paned sash window with 6/6 panes. Immediately to the right of the doorway was the entrance to the formerly separate property, but this has been completely blocked up and only the stone doorstep remains visible. To the far right is a larger window with a Georgian-paned double sash frame (6/6, 6/6 panes), which was used as a shop window at one point. The first floor contains three unevenly spaced windows, with that to the ground floor left being shorter (6/3 panes). The front façade is finished in painted roughcast with plain narrow surrounds to the windows. An exposed section of the north-east gable is finished in painted render.

The gabled roof is slated and includes a Velux window to the rear. A stone parapet and rendered chimney stack are present to the north-east gable. Cast iron rainwater goods serve the front elevation. The most recent Ordnance Survey map indicates a large return to the rear, though the rear is not accessible.

The building was originally two separate dwellings. The property to the north-east was used as a shop during the mid to later twentieth century. The two properties were amalgamated between 1971 and 1975, at which point the second door was blocked up. One of the original doorways to the front has been blocked up and a window enlarged as part of recent alterations.
