Description
Kircubbin Presbyterian Church is a plain rectangular gabled church built in 1861, standing near the shore of Strangford Lough off Main Street in Kircubbin. It occupies the site of an earlier eighteenth-century structure and is surrounded by a graveyard.
The church is finished in plain render without paint and features a chamfered plinth running the entire perimeter. The roof is pitched with Bangor blue slates and stone parapets, fitted with a mixture of cast iron and PVC gutters and downspouts.
The front eastern gable is the most decorated aspect of the building. It centres on a double timber panelled door encased with pilasters, flanked by multi-pane PVC sidelights separated from the door by these pilasters. Narrower half-pilasters frame the windows on the outer sides, with simple entablatures above each. Between the entablatures and directly above the door is an inscribed panel. A cornice stretches across the entablatures, centred above which is a semi-circular arch fanlight. The metal frame of this fanlight sits in front of the glass rather than forming the window frame itself. The door, sidelights, and fanlight are all enclosed by two rusticated pilasters and a slightly projecting pediment above. On either side of this arrangement are small ground-floor nine-pane PVC windows, with slightly larger upper-level PVC windows directly above, each topped with a cornice hood on curled brackets. A simple panel separates the ground and first-floor windows. Chamfered quoins mark the front gable corners, and a small chimney stack with pot sits at the gable apex.
The north side features three evenly spaced tall narrow eight-pane PVC windows with a similar arrangement to the south side. The west gable has two widely spaced tall and extremely narrow stained-glass windows. On the right side of the west gable, render has come away, revealing rubble construction with brick dressings to the window.
The graveyard surrounding the church contains headstones dating mainly from the latter half of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A low rubble wall with cast iron gates encloses the graveyard.
The Presbyterian congregation of Kircubbin was founded in 1777 following a separation from the Ballyhalbert congregation, with prominent local families such as the Wards and Baillies contributing to expenses for the first minister, Reverend George Brydone. The original church was built in the same year and is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834 as a T-shaped structure. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of circa 1834 described the building as being of "the plainest of architecture", measuring 78 by 48 feet with 167 pews each holding six people.
The church was rebuilt in 1861 by Reverend James Rowan, who had built the manse a year previously. The front gable was reconstructed in 1953, with one larger entrance replacing two smaller former doors and some restrained decoration added. PVC windows were installed circa 1992.
The setting of this church, historically defined by its location near the shore of Strangford Lough, has been diminished in recent times by the nearby construction of a modern warehouse/factory and houses.
