Description
This is a two-storey terraced house likely built in the early nineteenth century, situated at the northern end of Main Street in Kircubbin, County Down. It is part of a group of three properties forming a two-storey gabled terrace. The house occupies the northernmost position within the terrace and presents a single frontage to the street.
The front (east) elevation features a plain timber door with a simple fanlight on the left side of the ground floor. To the right of the door is a two-pane window that mimics the appearance of a sliding sash and case window, although it is made of PVC. A similar window is located on the first floor, and another two are above the neighbouring property at number 11. The property benefits from a "flying lease" over its neighbour. The north-facing gable has been rendered, revealing the exposed brickwork.
The rear of the property has been extensively extended on several occasions, and observations suggest it now appears largely to have a double gabled profile. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates, and two yellow brick chimneys are visible. Cast iron gutters and downspouts are also present.
A map from 1834 shows a terrace on this site, including a post office at number 11, which remains in that location today. A photograph taken around 1910, from the Green Collection, depicts the buildings largely as they appear now, with doors and windows of a similar size. However, the door of the adjacent property at number 13 was previously embellished with pilasters, a lintel, and a cornice, which have since been removed. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps, valuation records, directories from the 1820s and 1840s, and a photograph collection, contribute to this understanding of the building’s development.
