Description

This is a former thatched house, now a house, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. It appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832-3. The building is a 1½-storey, three-bay gabled house. The exterior fabric has been replaced with unsuitable materials. The main entrance is through a central porch on the west elevation. The roof is now tiled, with timber barge boards. The walls are rendered and finished with a dry dash of stone chippings, with a smooth cement-rendered plinth. There is a rendered chimney on the east gable. Windows are modern, rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. The porch roof matches the main roof. The front door is modern, rectangular, glazed, and panelled. Small windows are present in the north and south gables, illuminating the upper level, and are of a similar modern design to those on the front. The rear elevation has similar windows. The building is set back slightly from the main road in a rural location, with a tarmac area in front. A rubble stone boundary wall, whitened, projects from the south of the entrance front. Adjacent to the north is a range of gabled outbuildings built of whitened rubble stone with corrugated asbestos and slated roofs. A further rubble stone boundary wall includes a pair of rubble stone gate piers with field stone caps and a plain iron gate. The house was originally described in a 1972 survey as a “harled and whitened thatched cottage with a small brick chimney on either gable,” with sashed windows with a horizontal division flanking a rendered gabled porch; plain sashed windows in the gables provided upper level lighting, and the rear fenestration retained Georgian glazing.
