Description
This is a 20th-century terminal building, constructed between 1960 and 1979 and originally opened in October 1963 as Belfast Civil Airport. Designed by W.H. McAlister and Partners, it was awarded the RIBA Architectural Award for the Ulster Region in 1966. The building’s original purpose was to replace the earlier airfield, which had been established in 1918 as an Aircraft Acceptance Park for military aircraft manufactured by Harland and Wolff.
The building is a two-storey structure in a modern style, featuring a steel frame and a prominent roof with a serrated profile. Originally, the main elevations were clearly visible, detailed in black painted steel, aluminium, and grey brick, but later extensions now largely obscure these original features. The soffits of the roof are faced with timber slats. The main entrance originally faced north, but is now located within a large, later-added “check-in” area. The building retains its original roof structure, which is visible both on the entrance elevation and inside. However, the building has been substantially altered and subdivided, resulting in a loss of its original spatial qualities and external appearance.
The building is situated at the northern edge of Belfast International Airport in a rural area. A large area of parking is located in front of the building, beyond a lateral covered concourse.
