Description

7 Killeter Road, Castlederg

A single-storey, two-bay mud-walled thatched house dating from the early 19th century (1820–1839), built as a miller's dwelling on the site of a former corn mill. The house has deteriorated and suffered vandalism, but retains its basic layout and structure intact. The presence of a loft and purlin roof structure adds considerable architectural interest, and the building's historical association with the mill operations enhances its significance.

The house stands to the north-west of Castlederg, approached by a lane from the western outskirts of the town. It faces south-east and presents a two-bay whitewashed mud-walled structure beneath a thatched roof. Entry is via a timber ledged-and-braced door set within a windbreak porch with curved jambs; the thatch extends over the porch and covers a bed outshot projecting at the rear. Two parapet gables with chimneystack cappings define the roof: the south-west gable carries two red clay pots, and the north-east gable has one pot fitted with a spark arrester. The walls are finished in whitened plaster above a black plinth. Vertically sliding sash windows with single vertical divisions flank the porch entrance. The south-west side and rear have no openings; a modern casement window in the north-east gable lights the upper accommodation. A bed outshot with pitched roof projects beside the kitchen hearth at the south-west corner.

Contiguous stone-built and corrugated-iron outbuildings stand on the north-east side. The stone structure is whitewashed with a corrugated-iron roof finished with a concrete parapet and a rooflight on the rear slope. Adjacent is an entirely corrugated-iron structure with a sealed rear opening and concrete-coped gable.

Historical records confirm the building's presence on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map as the miller's dwelling associated with a corn mill leased by Kyle & Co. The 1834 valuation describes it as "an old, but well maintained" thatched building measuring 29 feet by 16½ feet by 5½ feet (quality letter '3C+'), with accompanying single-storey outbuildings and the single-storey mill to the south. Contemporary Ordnance Survey Memoirs note the mill operated an undershot wheel 12 feet in diameter and 1 foot 10 inches wide. The 1859 valuation again records the miller's house alongside the corn mill, kilns and offices, with Kyle & Co. as leaseholders and Lord Castle Stewart as lessor, at a rateable value of £20.

The building was listed following a request from Shelter received on 15 September 1983, with listing confirmed on 29 September 1984. Thatch repairs and other conservation work were undertaken in 1986 and 1989. A 1992 survey noted the thatch in fair condition whilst occupied. By May 1994 the building was unoccupied and in poor condition; re-thatching or at minimum holding repairs were recommended. The owner's 2016 request for delisting reconsideration was refused on 8 December 1997, with retention of the listing affirmed and the owner urged to sell. In 2002, a new owner's representatives applied for grant assistance, with a grant application form provided on 6 May 2003.
