The Old Brewery And Outbuilding Adjoining To East

The Old Brewery and the adjoining outbuilding to the east is a house with an attached outbuilding, dating from the late 17th century, with a late 18th century outshot that has been raised to two storeys. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a rubble plinth that is cemented on the left side. It features a moulded cornice and a double Roman tiled roof that has a slight bell-cast on the main block. The lower outbuilding has a separate roof covered with plain clay tiles and coped verges, with brick stacks at the gable ends of the main block.

The layout consists of a two-cell plan with a cross passage, and the outshot has been enlarged to a double pile. The adjoining outbuilding on the right has a crosswing at the rear. The main house is two storeys high with five bays, end pilasters, and a string course band, all characteristic of the late 17th century. It features leaded cruciform windows, a central pantiled gabled porch made of painted brick, and a six-panel door with inserted lights. The left return has a 20th century stair light and late 18th century leaded iron two-light windows in the extension, which is partly obscured by a single-storey addition with a slate roof.

The adjoining outbuilding is also two storeys and has three bays. It includes a pair of inserted lights above a rebuilt garage opening on the left, and two three-light casements on the right with segmental heads and voussoirs, with similar windows below. There are several iron cross ties present. The right return features a segmental headed two-light casement and sliding garage doors in a partly rebuilt wall. A fire token is set on the facade below the eaves, likely belonging to the Norwich Union, one of five insurers listed in North Curry in Kelly's Directory from 1865. The interior has not been seen. This fine brick house makes an important contribution to the townscape and is also known as the Old Brewery.
