Description
This is a house, originally built in the early 17th century and later renovated in the early 18th century ("1702" is carved into a beam), with additions and divisions made around 1800. It has been divided into two separate houses, numbered 22 (Old Brewery) and 24 (The Brew House). The building is constructed with a timber frame covered in roughcast rendering, a front facade of sandy red brick, a lower red brick extension to the east, and a white weatherboarded rear extension from the 20th century. It has slate roofs, with a hipped roof profile.
The original house was a three-room-width plan, incorporating a lobby-entry layout, with a later east cross wing. When the east wing was extended and divided to create a separate house, the original lobby was removed from the east side of the middle room. The south front is formal, built of brick, and extends over three storeys, with a moulded cornice below a parapet. There are three windows across the front. The windows are recessed sash windows with rubbed flat arches; the top floor has 4/4 pane sashes, the first floor has 8/8 pane sashes, and triple sashes are located at each end of the front, with an 8/8 sash in the middle. Two re-used early 18th-century doorcases with pediments frame the six-panel flush bead doors. These doorcases have eared architraves and a swelled frieze. A large internal chimney, located a third from the west end, has four diagonally set square shafts concealed by raising the height of the house. A chamfered axial beam features a bar-stop. The eastern extension was used as a straw plait school in the 19th century.
