Description

Swan Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and a 20th-century addition to the rear. The house is timber-framed with a low brick sill and plastered infill panels. The front of the house has painted brick panels between the bay posts on the ground floor. The rear wing is of painted brick, and the upper part of the west gable end and the projecting dormer are clad in dark weatherboarding. The steep roof is covered in old red tiles, with a slated dormer.

The house is a wide, three-bay structure facing north. The east bay has first-floor windows set under the eaves, but the floor level is raised, and the first floor is lit by a wide, gabled dormer that projects above the wall plate. A small, swept dormer is located at the eaves above the door at the east end of the middle bay, and there is an internal chimney built against the west end of that bay. A later chimney is situated on the west side of the east bay.

The front of the house is irregular, with three small casement windows on the first floor. A two-light casement window is to the left of the plank front door, which has a flat moulded hood supported by shaped brackets. To the right of the door is a sash window with 12 panes, and to the right of that is a rectangular, flat-topped oriel casement window. The east gable shows a roof with clasped purlins, a cambered collar, and a cambered tie-beam truss, which may have continued to the west.
