Description

The Church of St. Catherine is an Anglican church that dates back to the 12th century, with additions from the 15th and 16th centuries. It features a rubble core with roughcast walls and a slate roof, complete with coped verges and two bases for finials. The church is primarily in the Perpendicular style, comprising a three-bay nave, a chancel, and a south porch. The nave has two-light windows with simple tracery and a four-light east window with elaborate tracery. The chancel consists of two bays with simple two-light windows and a traceried east window.

To the south of the nave, there are two large three-stage buttresses, one made of banded Ham stone and ashlar, while the other is roughcast. There are also four similar buttresses on the north side. The south porch is simply gabled, featuring a chamfered outer door opening that has early graffiti. Inside the porch, there is a flagstone floor with benches, and a Norman inner doorway with a semi-circular head adorned with Arabesque decoration and colonettes.

The interior has plastered walls and flagstone floors, with the nave boasting a ceiled wagon roof with ribs and booses, while the chancel also has a ceiled wagon roof and a panelled chancel arch. Flanking the east window are two niches with ornamental heads. The church contains 16th-century pews, some of which have been restored, an octagonal Norman font, and Laudian altar rails. A notable feature is the fine pulpit dated 1634, which has strapwork decoration and a cornice; part of this pulpit has been reused as a reader. Additional elements include a piscina with a cusped head and bowl, an aumbrey with a 19th-century door, a 17th-century poor box, and a 17th-century chest. There are also fragments of medieval stained glass in the lights of all the windows, along with two small 16th-century brass plaques on the floor inscribed with texts.
