Description
The road bridge over the River Isle, likely built in the 19th century, may include earlier fragments. It is constructed from local stone rubble with ashlar dressings. The bridge features two segmental arches, one of which is dry. It has a stepped parapet with plain copings, some edges are chamfered while others are rounded. The parapets are 'waisted' in plan and have serpentine corners, except for the now straightened south-west corner. There is a cutwater on the south side. The site of the bridge is probably ancient but was likely modified when the Chard canal opened in 1824, which necessitated raising this section of the road.
