Description

The Church of St Peter is an Anglican parish church located in North Wootton. It dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and was restored in the 19th century, which included the rebuilding of the chancel. The church is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, featuring lead sheeting and slate roofs, with coped verges topped with cruciform finials.

The structure includes a nave, a chancel with an organ loft, a south porch, and a west tower. The tower is embattled and has diagonal buttresses and pinnacles, along with 2-light bell chamber windows that have louvres. The nave consists of two bays, while the chancel is smaller, also with two bays. There is a rood stair turret on the south side of the nave, which has a lancet window.

The porch has an ashlar frontage and diagonal buttresses, and it features a sundial. The outer door opening is shafted, and to the right of this is a stoup. The interior is plastered with tile floors and has 19th-century wagon roofs. The arches leading to the chancel and tower are in the Perpendicular style.

Notable interior features include 15th-century benches, some of which have carved ends, and additional 15th-century carvings on the choir stalls. There is a Norman tub font with cable banding and an 18th-century cover. The church also contains a rood stair and remnants of a 17th-century communion table. The royal arms displayed are dated 1826, and there is some 19th-century stained glass in the chancel. Additionally, there is a late 18th-century tablet and two detached 17th-century tablets located in the porch, along with a late 19th-century organ.
