Description

Manor House is a significant building located on West Compton Lane in Pilton, dating from the 16th century with substantial alterations made in the 17th century, along with some later minor changes. The structure is built from coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings and features a triple Roman tile roof. The roof has coped verges with bases for finials, including one with an octagonal finial and another with an oblong sundial. There are three ashlar stacks and a single large brick stack, two of which are located on small projecting gables.

Originally an open hall house, it has been modified to a cross passage plan with added wings. The building has two storeys and attics, with a symmetrical facade comprising five bays. The first bay is in a projecting wing beneath a front-facing gable, while the second and fourth bays feature first-floor windows also under front-facing gables. The windows include two, three, and four-light ovolo moulded stone mullioned windows with stopped labels. There is a blank stone plaque in a moulded stone surround on the extreme right gable face, and a three-light mullioned window to the right leads to a basement, also with a stopped label.

The door opening to the third bay from the left is framed by an eared and moulded stone architrave under a label, featuring a 19th-century six-panelled door with the top two panels glazed. Inside, the house boasts a moulded cross-beamed ceiling adorned with rich ornamental plasterwork, and a dog-leg staircase with pierced pendants and caps on the newel posts. Throughout the interior, there are many 17th-century two-panelled doors, and two 17th-century fireplaces on the first floor with dressed stone surrounds—one featuring a four-centred head and the other with bolection moulding and a cornice shelf.
