Description
Knowle Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, substantially rebuilt in the 17th century, possibly in 1648 when a text was painted inside, with 19th-century and numerous 20th-century alterations to the exterior. It is constructed of colourwash rubble with a double Roman tile roof, having a coped verge to the left and a hipped section to the right. There are two brick stacks and a rendered stack. The house originally had an L-shaped plan, probably as a longhouse with an open hall and a contemporary cross wing, later altered to a three-unit and cross passage plan. It is two storeys high and has four bays, featuring 3- and 4-light casement windows; an exception is the 3-light bead moulded stone mullioned window on the ground floor to the left, which has a cornice dripmould. The central door opening is obscured by a 20th-century lean-to, and there is a 4-light casement window to the front, with a 20th-century door to the right. A single-bay return elevation has casement windows. The interior retains a cross beam ceiling, a plank and muntin partition, a painted text on the first floor, and a fireplace with a dressed stone surround and a 4-centred head. The roofs are of cruck construction, displaying arch bracing, wind bracing and areas of smoke blackening.
