Description

Two attached houses, dating from the 16th century, which were converted into separate dwellings in the 18th and 19th centuries, and altered again in the 20th century. The walls are painted render over rubble, with a thatched roof featuring a brick stack to the left gable end and a plain-tiled lean-to on the right (for No.8). No.8 also has a lateral stack with a brick shaft and a small fire-window to the return side. The building follows a three-unit plan on a sloping site, incorporating a stair turret to the rear right and a lateral stack to the front right. The two storeys have a three-window front. There are 20th-century casement windows, with two 2- and 3-light windows in half-dormers to the left. No.10 has a 20th-century door within a hipped thatched porch located to the left of centre. No.8’s 20th-century door is within a single-story rubblestone lean-to extension. The rear, facing St Michael's Road, is blanked, with a stair turret serving No.8. Inside No.10, the first and ground floors are altered, and two solid rubblestone walls in the roof space suggest the original party wall was formerly on the right. A single massive pegged truss, with a trenched purlin to the rear and wheat-straw thatch, is located to the right of the door, above No.8. The interior of No.8 has not been inspected, but is reported to contain an open fireplace, exposed beams, and a newel staircase. A high rubblestone wall, approximately 30 metres in length, is attached to the right of the houses.
