Description
The socket of the market cross, located opposite the Egremont Hotel on Bank Street in Williton, dates from the 13th to 14th century. It is made of red sandstone and features a square shape with broached corners. Currently, it has an embedded concrete shaft that is about 100 millimeters high. According to historical sources, this market cross originally stood approximately 150 meters north at the junction of Long Street and Fore Street but was reduced by the mid-19th century to serve as a block stone to support the wheels of carriages at a nearby confectioner's house. Williton is notable for having two market crosses in addition to a churchyard cross. The socket is primarily listed for its historic interest.
