Description

The building is a police station and public library, originally constructed in 1858 by John Norton. It features red sandstone random rubble with Bath stone dressings and steeply pitched clay tiled roofs. The design includes a bell cote on the pyramid roof of the central tower, kneelers at the gable ends, and external stepped stone stacks on the returns, along with octagonal stone stacks and cavetto moulded caps flanking the tower. The structure has an E-plan and a symmetrical facade, consisting of one and a half storeys with a two-storey central tower and gabled crosswings. It has five bays, with gabled two-light dormers rising from the eaves and three-light arched casements at the gable ends. The central window features stone tracery in a two-light design, while the ground floor has metal three-light mullioned and transomed windows. The pointed arch entrance, also centrally located, is dated 1858 and is flanked by lean-to tiled porches set in the re-entrant angles of the wings. The doors are made of planks and have decorative hinges.
