Description
Kelways Nurseries consists of a range of linked buildings, primarily from the mid-19th century. The structures are built from local lias stone and topped with double Roman clay tile roofs, arranged in an 'L' plan with four distinct units.
Unit 'A' is located to the east of the offices and features a hipped roof, standing two stories tall with three bays. It has a plinth, string courses, and casement windows. The upper windows are set in near-elliptical arches with impost blocks and keystones, while the lower level includes large subdivided shop window bays in the first two bays and a throughway with a near-elliptical arch in bay three, which may date from the later 19th century.
Unit 'B', situated at the southeast corner, has a Sussex hipped roof and rises three stories with a layout of three bays by two bays. This unit is constructed from random rubble with stone dressings, featuring a plinth and string courses. The ground floor showcases wide near-elliptical arches with impost blocks and keystones, filled with greenhouse-type windows and doors. The upper floors contain 2-light small-pane casements set in voussoired segmental arched openings.
Unit 'C' is located to the north of Unit 'B' and is connected by an iron bridge at the first floor level. It is made from cut and squared stone, has a hipped roof with Bridgwater ridge finials, and features an upper floor addition, making it four stories tall with one bay facing east. The unit has an elliptical arched doorway below, with 2-light casement windows above. The south elevation mirrors this with a two-bay design, including a door at the first floor and windows on the second floor with elliptical arched heads.
Unit 'D' is linked to the north of Unit 'C' by a single-storey timber and corrugated iron building. It is built from random unsquared uncoursed stone and features a plinth and band courses. This unit has a plain gabled roof adorned with ornamented Bridgwater terracotta ridge and finials, standing four stories tall with three bays on the east elevation, set at right angles to Units 'B' and 'C'. It includes 2-light casement windows in voussoired segmental arched openings.
The interiors of the buildings were not observed. The entire complex has significant group value, as the nurseries were established in 1851 as the Royal Nursery and later adopted the name of their founder.
